So, The Monte has issues... all induced by me mostly. I added a turbo to a N/A car for a little more oomph... and it put a BFG on my face for sure, but not so much with the stock transmission. I then ended up getting a Cobalt, which was a bad idea for 2 reasons, 1, I couldnt afford it, and 2, I let the Monte sit.. on the grass. FF 1 year, got rid of the Cobalt, and the Monte is now cancerous. The brake lines have rotted just under the booster, against the firewall, in an area I cant get to because of the transmission. Add to that a de-laminating oil pan that now is more rust than steel. Oil pan cant be done without at LEAST lifting the engine. So I go into my usual mode of overkill and decide to pull everything, clean the car up and get it all done at once.

Now this is a story all about how the monte's life got all flipped, turned inside out...

Hey, since you are pulling the engine; how's about cleaning that engine compartment!? We want shiny pics for the reveal! Glad you are tearing into things and the kids are actually letting you.

*edit*

Wanted to add that when the time comes; you can borrow my buffer if you want to really make the black pop and shine again! I'm a lil low on supplies atm but, I'll be re-stocking just as soon as I catch back up on bills.

actually, the bay needs a blasting and some POR15, the more I take off, the more bubbling paint I see, I may have to get another quart :/ shits like $85 a can :/

I'm almost done with the pull out, got some last hoses, the shifter line and the axels that are being a bitch. The wheel bearings fell apart on the way out, I knew they were bad though, they were whining when the car was parked, and sitting only made em worse.

Sitting is pretty much what did the car in, rusted oil pan, brake lines and there isnt much left of the radiator support on the bottom. I got lucky though, the tranny cooler line broke as I was pushing it in to disengage it, THAT would have been a major problem if it happened while I was driving somewhere.

soo, after resarching and generally being lazy, I found a HD tranny that I almost bought for $400

turns out being lazy was on my side for once, the tranny was from an 04, which was different and would not have worked at all, even with mods. I also found out that my trans is the 4t65-e, not the 4t60e like the boards all were saying (RPO option codes FTW)

Apparently the 60's stopped in 99, and the 2000+'s got the 65's, all I need to do to take mine from an -e to an -HD, is swap the cluched diff, for the posi style diff, and get a diff cover off an HD trans because it's longer. I just got the set off of ebay for $250 shipped.

I also found replacement wheel bearing/hubs for $114 shipped, instead of $200 each from GMPartsDirect.com

Now for the scary part... I'ma rebuild my tranny... I saw a walkthru, the kit is $150, plus some valves that may or may not need to be replaced, once I gut it, I'll know.

So, got everything unbolted, unhooked and drained (sadly, mostly onto the garage floor :/ )

Put on some chains, and slid in the crane to pop everything out.

R.I.P. Monte... 2001-2010 93k miles.. I ripped it's heart out....

It also has cancer, you can see it in the pics below, those lines are half of what started this, brake lines that rotted thru. It's sitting on the pan ATM, so I cant get a pic of THAT mess right now. While I was inside, I found the leak that was spraying brake fluid, it was the front passenger line.. the one that loops behind the steering rack and over the exhaust, would have had to leave it there, and just run a new one some other way, NO way to get to it with the tranny in. It actually fell apart in my hands when I went to remove it.

The radiator support is also pretty well gone, the more scale I clean off, the more holes in it I find.
